What is the difference between a hybrid and innerspring mattress?
What Is An Innerspring Mattress?
An innerspring mattress is a traditional mattress. A layer of springs forms the base layer of this type of mattress. The springs are sometimes metal. The springs provide support while the upper foam or quilted layers provide comfort.
The springs allow air to flow freely throughout the mattress, so sleeping on an innerspring mattress may help to keep you cool while you sleep. Springs also provide bouncy support and they help to prevent motion transfer.
What Is The Difference Between Innerspring and Pocket Coil
The spring support base of a traditional innerspring mattress is all one piece. The coils are connected to one another.
A pocket coil or encased coil mattress has individual springs or coils that are placed into bags or pockets. The pockets are then stitched together. So the pocket coils can be compressed independently of one another. A pocket coil mattress may also be called an individual coil mattress.
Pocket coil mattress manufacturers may vary in how they package or stitch the coils together. Some use individual coils while other bundle the coils into sections like four packs or quad-packs for example. Others may package sturdier coils together to form rows around the perimeter or edge of a mattress to provide edge support.
An encased coil mattress design helps absorb motion created by one partner without disturbing or waking someone sleeping on the opposite side of the mattress. This motion absorption is often called motion transfer or motion isolation.
What Is A Pocket Coil Mattress?
A pocket coil mattress is similar to an innerspring but it offers more targeted support. Pocketed coil mattresses have individually wrapped coils that are wrapped or placed into a fabric pocket and then stitched together to form the support base.
Because each coil is packaged individually, a pocket coil mattress can reduce motion transfer.
If you have a partner that tosses and turns or if you’re a light sleeper, you may appreciate a mattress designed to absorb motion.
What Is A Hybrid Mattress?
A hybrid mattress is designed to offer the support of a traditional innerspring mattress with the comfort of a memory foam mattress. Hybrid mattresses have a base layer of pocket coils topped with a layer or multiple layers of memory foam.
Some of the hybrid mattresses that we carry have multiple layers of various types of memory foam. Each layer serves a specific purpose.
For example, polyester comfort foam provides comfort and durability. High density super soft quilt foam adds an additional comfort layer. High density gel memory foam is often used to provide lumbar support while the pocketed coil base layer absorbs motion and offers increased support.
You may find mattresses in our showroom that have layers of gel infused memory foam, green tea infused memory foam, charcoal infused memory foam, copper infused memory foam, and more.
